The Roman Republic was a democracy, of sorts. They had town meetings/votes that men could participate in. So the first democracy was in the Classical Period.
Feudalsim was very important in medival Japan and Europe. The manor system was the basis and was a bunch of lords and peasants. The lords responded to the kings. This system lead to federalism.
About the same time, the nobles and lords of England forced King John to sign the Magna Carta which allowed people to own land, the right of habes corpus which means you cannot be imprisoned withouth reason and tril, along with various other things.
Federalism came about after the Catholic Reformation and the Thirty Years’ War in Europe around 1650 (the end of the Renaissance.) Federalism is the concept of a main central government with local goverments.
