Reel Bad Arabs – 4

Hi, I picked up these videos from thalperi’s channel. He does not allow comments he does not like. They all have to be approved by him. In other words, you can have all the free speech you want, as long as you do not say anything he finds offensive. So I left a comment on his channel, which in retrospect seemed hateful and malevolent. I assured him that he will be sorry, it seemed like a threat but all I was referring to was the fact that I will repost those videos with freedom to comment. In retrospect I regret losing my temper that way. Let him know that. In any case, free speech may live here as long as YouTube wants. Looks to me like cherry picking for the purpose of propaganda, rather than a documentary. Not to mention a politically correct way to silence criticism. The Israelis do it too. If you criticize the policies of the Israeli government you risk being labeled an anti-semite. I know at least five Hollywood movies that show Arabs in good light: English Patient Lawrence of Arabia Ben-Hur Mohammad, Messenger of God The Wind and the Lion The 13th Warrior Anyone knows more?

GIVE WAR A CHANCE? The Utility of War

The Prussian military historian Carl von Clausewitz famously observed that “war is merely a continuation of politics by other means.” These “other” (violent) means have been used on countless occasions throughout human history to settle conflicts over land, resources, and political rule. But what is the utility of war in the modern world? In a world with weapons of mass destruction, have the means of war delegitimized its use? In a world of expanding democracy, and cultural and economic interdependence, has the use of force become outdated?

Richard Dawkins: An atheist’s call to arms

www.ted.com The session was titled “The Design of Life,” and the TED audience was probably expecting remarks about evolution’s role in our history from biologist Richard Dawkins. Instead, he launched into a full-on appeal for atheists to make public their beliefs and to aggressively fight the incursion of religion into politics and education (quoting Douglas Adams in the bargain). Scientists and intellectuals hold very different beliefs about God from the American public, he says, yet they are cowed by the overall political environment. Dawkins’ scornful tone drew strongly mixed reactions from the audience; some stood and applauded his courage. Others wondered whether his strident approach could do more harm than good. Dawkins went on to publish The God Delusion and become perhaps the world’s best-known atheist.
