THE PATRIOT ACT

I fully acknowledge the necessity of security in these troubled times. I will fully support any strengthening of the United States Coast Guard, Customs Service, Border Patrol, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the National Security Agency as long as the traditional rights of American citizens are not comprimised. This means that if there is any debate at all about civil rights being in danger then the proposed action is wrong.

I will work ceaselessly to counter the hastily and dangerously crafted portions of the PATRIOT ACT which are right now serving to erode our constitutional freedoms and personal security.

Read the PATRIOT ACT.

Then read the Bill of Rights again if you haven't lately.

On this point, I completely agree with the ACLU. Read what they have to say about it here.

I can not sit back and allow federal agents to secretly examine any citizen's reading activities through libraries and book sellers.

I can not tolerate the unconstitutional practice of indefinite detention. This is the most dangerous power that any government agency could ever hold. Anyone could be a suspected terrorist in these times. People in Argentina are still looking for "The Disappeared". Are we ready for this to happen in the United States?

Those who are being held should be either charged as criminals or given status as prisoners of war. The criminals should be treated as such according to our laws and Constitution. Prisoners of war should be treated according to international conventions, but they may and should be held until the nation, corporation, or organization they were fighting for declares an end to hostilities.

Last, but not least is the "Sneak and Peek" provision of the PATRIOT ACT. This allows federal agents to invade your home, automobile, or work place when you are not present, examine anything they desire, and leave with no trace of their search, without ever notifying you that it has been done. All this can happen just because they "think" you might be a terrorist. Now that I have posted this on the world wide web, I wonder how long it will be before they suspect me.
