As we are in the USA, the French appear to have unrealistic ideas about the amount of resources required to support people in retirement and some fantasy about retiring and living for more than 1/3 or more of live “in retirement.” Until the advent of social insurance systems begun in 1889 (Germany & Otto von Bismarck), most workers worked until they died, were too disabled to work and moved in and were supported by relatives, or died in poverty. With only a few exceptions, pensions didn’t exist until the 20th century. Pensions are not social insurance or Social Security. They are retirement savings…like a 401k!
Until 20th century pensions, only a few “rich” folks retired (as we think of it in 21st century terms) with pensions or enough savings for a long retirement. To imagine that one can work for 30-40 years and retire on Social Security or other gov’t transfer payment systems for 30-40 years is unrealistic….the numbers (the capital requirements, historic/ reasonable returns, time value of money, smaller tax source of Soc Sec payments, etc.) simply aren’t robust enough to support most folks. Remember there will be higher and higher medical costs as folks live longer and longer. The retired/ elderly folks will have to pay for medical care costs, too. In the USA, Medicare & Social Security are transfer payment systems, they are not pensions (money already saved and invested), and they do not operate as private insurance systems operate. Soc Sec retirees survive only with the largess of younger workers who support Soc Sec with their payments. As the human race lives longer, world wide, unless individuals begin to save enormous sums (25%+ after tax for 30+ years) towards retirement and plan on approx. 10 years of retirement before acutuarial death, one should expect longer (not shorter) working years and shorter retirement years..ending in death.
To estimate one’s necessary retirement savings needed to live at current income until one’s death, divide one’s before tax income by .04 (4%) and that answer is how much one will need to have saved.
For example, to generate $50,000 of pre-tax income, one has to have saved and invested approx. $1,250,000..

Is it really that hard to try to understand all of the subtleties and complexities which characterize politics? Do we really need to see the opposition as illegitimate villains to be discredited rather than a well-intentioned opposition to be debated and reasoned with?

Should most people actually choose to exercise their right to vote, given simplistic way they think about politics?

The problem is, they BOTH look presidential! Mitt Romney is tall and has a strong chin, but Fred Thompson has this comforting father-figure thing going for him. So who do I choose?

As a member of the Republican base, I choose my candidate without considering the substance of their policy proposals or their political history, so I have to go by purely artificial considerations such as, ‘Which candidate satisfies my creepy Big Daddy fetish?’

I’ve read how important it is for him to come out ahead there. I volunteered to be make phone calls from home today and of the people that didn’t hang up, all of them either were supporting Romney or were convinced to support him after talking to me.

What really shocked me were the people who said they were planning on voting, but who didn’t know anything about the candidates or where they stood on issues.

If you were in Romneys shoes, would you do exactly what he’s doing or is there more that he can do?
